This is a U. S. Army outpost telephone switchboard #D-12841 case plus handset (receiver). "Switchboard Outpost, 8 Line Signal Corps, U. S. Army order No.W9490 August 15, 1917”.  Instructions and wiring diagram are located in cover. The outside dimensions are 10 x 14.5 x 11 inches.  Very rare item.
