Belt Axe / Tomahawk

Late 18th century belt axe is originally from the area of Pawlet, Vermont  This early specimen is crudely made but typical of that time period.

The primitive hardwood handle appears to be original or a period replacement.  There are six square nails at the head of the handle.

Handle markings at the base are questionable as to being period and may have been added later.

The head is hand forged iron and appears to have an applied sharpened edge.  No markings are found on the head.

Overall length is 14 inches.  The base of the handle is 1.5 " wide and tapers to 1.25" at the head.  Head measures 6 inches and 1 5/8 inches wide at the blade.

Very nice example of a belt ax at a reasonable price.
